With a capacity of 160,000 population equivalents, extendable to 235,000 population equivalent, the Grand Prado plant is intended to replace, for the commune of Saint-Denis, the Jamaican plant, which is obsolete and limited to primary treatment for 50,000 population equivalent, and which will eventually be transformed into a lift station. It will also treat the waste water of Sainte-Marie, a commune which has so far had no treatment plant.
The gardens of the STEP are realized with a high biodiversity. In addition to the reconstitution of an original forest around endemic species, the STEP garden is also an area for development, insects and birds. This garden also offers visual and olfactory displays by visitors and staff through an educational trail.
